This is a record that should satisfy all but the most strict of collectors. There may be slight ring or cover wear, or minor writing on the cover. He began his recording career as a gospel singer in Born to damning poverty, Brown quit school in the sixth grade.
He was convicted of armed robbery stealing a car at age sixteen and sent to a juvenile detention center where he formed a gospel quartet, its instruments consisting of comb and paper, a washtub bass, lard tubs for drums and a wood box rigged as a kind of mandolin. In Brown launched his own record label, Try Me Records.
Show in , there no way the gutsy but yet fledgling Stones could match his act [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. He handed the reins to that band to one of his more important associates, Fred Wesley [ 1 , 2 ], in Brown was a phenomenal performer on stage, a virtual power plant who could turn on the lights of an entire city, nothing quite like him or his music in all the history of rock n roll.
He employed a crew of 50 to 60 highly managed people to produce well over concerts each year. He gave his last concert in , dying of heart failure on Christmas that year [ 1 , 2 ]. Though claiming Little Richard his inspiration, Brown singlehandedly created funk, an asymmetric contrapuntal polyrhythmic beat, and put it on the map [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ].

Moving to Tennessee in , they eventually ended up in Nashville where the brothers graduated from high school. Phil was still attending high school when he and Don recorded their first commercial tracks together with the Tunsmiths in Nashville on Nov 9 of , both at vocals and guitar: Most sources have that issued in Their third commercial session was held August 17, , in Nashville with the same gang excepting Day out and Floyd Cramer at piano.

Hawkins continued onward in Toronto w another formation of the Hawks, eventually coming to reside in Peterborough, Ontario. In he reunited with early members of the Hawks basically The Band at a concert celebrating the leveling of the Berlin Wall. In he performed for the newly inaugurated President, Bill Clinton. Hawkins has since remained a favored adopted son in Canada, receiving an honorary doctorate from Laurentian University in Though plagued or recent with pancreatic cancer, Hawkins yet performs as of this writing.

The Gypsies were an all-girl vocal group signed in They had earlier released a non-charting single and later released two others on Old Town. Four years later, Shirley and Earnestine were part of the Flirtations, who had a top single with "Nothing But a Heartache" [Deram ]. Old Town stopped issuing records in , only to pick up again in , continuing where they left off, with Arthur Prysock releases. This lasted until or so, when the records stopped.
This album was reissued in on the Cotillion label as Solid Gold Old Town , and is worth seeking out. If you find one, though, be aware that this album was bootleged in the s and is an almost identical copy. It was also reissued on the Woodbury label, owned by Hy Weiss, in [Woodbury ].
The Old Town label did do stereo recordings, although the original albums in the series are believed to have been issued in mono only. Old Town survived into the s mainly by issuing the recordings of deep-voiced crooner Arthur Prysock.
Arthur was the brother of Red Prysock, who had several rock and roll instrumental hits in the s. Hy Weiss, a music industry legend, died March 21, The earliest singles on the Old Town label were yellow with black print, with the "Old Town" logo at the top. Very early singles, i. This was changed to a more modern font on both the 78s and 45s. This yellow label is known to have been issued on singles until mid In mid, both the 78s and 45s changed label design to a blue label. The 78 label was plain with an Old English logo, reverting back to the early design, but in blue with silver print.
The 45 label design featured a new logo, a light blue with black print, and with the outline of a city behind the words "Old Town Records". This changeover from the yellow label was made some time between Old Town , which was issued on the yellow label, and Old Town , which had the new blue label for both 78 and About , Old Town switched label designs again far left , this time to a black label with silver print, with a blue skyline at the top, and "Old Town" written in red on a full moon above the skyline.
The album label near left was blue with black print, like the blue 45 label, even after the changeover to the black label for the 45s.
